Hyundai Elantra C1260 and C2400: calibration cleared the codes—but not the fault.

A 2013 Hyundai Elantra arrived with electric power-steering faults after prior steering-system work. The steering-angle calibration completed and the codes temporarily cleared, but live data and a returning motor fault showed that the vehicle still had a hardware problem.

What the vehicle showed

The warning was the beginning—not the diagnosis.

ADAS warnings often involve several systems at once. The useful question is not simply whether a calibration can be selected, but whether the vehicle is electrically, mechanically, and electronically ready to complete it.

The steering-angle calibration passed

The SAS calibration completed and both faults cleared. That confirmed the vehicle could communicate with the EPS module and accept the steering-angle procedure, but it did not prove the complete steering system was healthy.

The torque routine told a different story

The torque-sensor function would not complete. Live torque readings began near zero, changed abruptly when the wheel was moved, and then stopped updating even as the wheel continued to turn.

C2400 returned after the wheel was operated

Cycling the vehicle and clearing the faults created only a temporary code-free condition. Once the system was loaded through steering movement, C2400 returned and the calibration screen could no longer progress normally.

Motor replacement resolved the concern

The EPS motor assembly was replaced after the diagnostic evidence pointed away from a simple calibration issue. With the replacement motor installed, the steering system operated normally and the fault condition was resolved.

What this case teaches

Calibration only works when the prerequisites are right.

    A completed steering-angle calibration confirms only that procedure; it does not certify every EPS component.

    A temporary code-free state can disappear as soon as the steering system is operated under load.

    Live data that jumps, freezes, or stops responding can be more revealing than a fault-code description alone.

    Repeated calibration attempts cannot repair a failed EPS motor or another active hardware fault.
